Need 954 steering stem adjust nut torque spec
Ive put a 954 front end on my F4i and I need the steering stem adjusting nut torque spec. I downloaded a 954 manual from the guy on the forumwho offers all the Honda manuals but that manual lists the wrong spec for this part.
If anyone has a Honda, Clymer, or whichever manual with this spec in it I would appreciate knowing it. This is theone that's a one piece nut and flat metalcap that fits over the neck, not the steering stem nut that goes on last after you put the top triple on. I need the spec for the larger nut that goes on right after the top seal, usually listed as the adjusting nut.

The sticky for the 954 manual has the info you need. After you download it, go to section 13-2, then refer to 13-33. The torque spec listed for the the steering stem adjusting nut is 13 pounds. The stem adjusting nut torque spec is 30 pounds. Not sure which one you're referring to, so check the diagram in the manual.

First let me say thanks for posting and looking up that info but going on that infoits 2 specs for the same part.
The stem adjusting nut is the first one to go on right after the top seal, then the lock nut and washer, then the top triple clamp, then the stem nut goes on top last(not adjusting nut). I need the spec for the adjusting nut that loads the bearings. The last/top nut is about 75 ft lbs.

Okay, I went back and read the manual in detail for you. Just to be sure the nut that you're talking about needs a special tool to be removed/replaced with. Instead of smooth sides it has notches on the sides. Looks kind of like a star.
Initial torque for installation is 30 pounds. Then turn the fork from side to side 5 times to check for binding, and to seat the bearings. If there is no binding occurring that requires troubleshooting. Loosen the nut and retorque to 13 pounds. After which you again check for binding. Install the lockwasher and locknut on top of that. The locknut is fingertight, and should be within a quarter turn give or take to have the notches aligned.Per the manual the shorter tabs are bent down and the longer ones up. Thesteering stem nut at the top is then torqued to 76 pounds.
Hope this helps.

That sounds right. I forgot about the tighten then loosen then retighten steps. I actually made my own special tool and have all the parts already installed, I just don't have the proper torque set yet and my lock nut is loose. Thanks for the help
