Default torque spec's

How important are the torque spec's in the manual? I had to take my tire off to get a new tire and the manual says 69 ft-lbs for the rear axle bolt, but that number seems very low, it just feels like that is not enough pressure(ft-lbs) for the axle bolt. what will happen if i over torque it to say 150 lbs? It is still easy to get to 150 lbs. Just doesn't seem like it is tight enough. I hope everyone knows what i'm trying to say.

thanks for the help
