I happen to have a spare gauge cluster and plugged it in with the same results so its not the cluster but something that is in the power loop that the cluster completes. I ran the bike with no cluster plugged in and it did not change anything, i didnt think it would make a difference because the short still "exists" even without the cluster plugged in.

the short was also gone when i unplugged the sub-harness but i cant run the bike like that because of the BAS so im unsure if that is the issue or not at the moment, either way it needs to be fixed so thats the first thing im going to work on.

The only other thing i can suggest at the moment, and it of course could be painfully long, but get out your volt meter and start checking continuity on every wire from end to end. I know that sounds miserable, but if you have one crapping out you should get a lower voltage passing thru it, (i think [&:])

I suck at electrical btw.

I might have to do that. Ill have some time tomorrow and ill start on it... would i need to have the key turned on for that since some things only get power with the key on? Thanks for the suggestion 2!

If you have a volt meter you should not need power on, there should be a setting on there to test for resistance.

Ohms? I miss understood at first, should have a lower resistance if its crapping out? i have a decent multimeter that will do it, im going to start plugging away with testing the resistance from one end to the other. hopfully it is a quick find.

I did not really read anything after my previous post so sorry if this was already posted.

I just remembered that my buddy had the same problem with his VFR, we replaced the unit and the problem was solved!

It was the regulator unit. The black metal box with heavy fins.. The thing was super hot and his bike was not charging. Once we swapped this unit out everything was golden! I hope your problems are as easily solved!!
