Default Coolant tank melting

Started to notice that distinctive burning/melting plastic smell and when I look around the bike I saw this, the damn coolant tank is being melted by the headers. My exhaust system isn't stock, honestly not sure if the stock one had a heat shield or not but I'm going to have to come up with something. Anyone else have this happen to them? I bought the bike last fall, the tank isn't leaking yet but seems like it's just a matter of time. Gonna grab some heat resistant film and put it on the tank, see if that helps. Prolli should invest in a new tank soon too.

Some models have a thick rubber flap/protective shield for this purpose. One of my bikes purchased used, had the flap installed backwards (wrong side of bottle) & the bottle started melting. A hole developed & the bottle had to be replaced. New bottle & rubber shielding on correct side & it worked perfectly from then on.

Happen to me and had to replace the tank I put some heat reflective tape on the front side of the new tank and that cured that problem...

I got some heat reflective tape and put it on the front of the coolant tank, should be fine as it hadn't melted a hole through it yet. When I get a new tank I'm gonna wrap the headers, then I shouldn't have any issues.

sent you a pm again. sorry i've been so slow getting back to you. if you're wrapping the headers, i wouldn't even worry about reflective tape.

I put the tape on the tank that's already started melting so it doesn't get any worse, I'll wrap the pipes when I install the new tank and won't put any tape on the new tank.
