Hey all, im in the market for a bike and this local guy has a 2000 Honda CBR 954 RR for sale. Hes posting it for $3,500. It has about 24,000 miles on it.He also jettied the bike so its going to be a beast lol.
Im just curious what i should look at specifically for this model of bikes when checking it out.
Personally I always start with inspection of service-records. Compare to schedule in manual to verify everything's up to date. Then complete PPI with independent mechanic before any purchases (cars, moto, RV, etc):
1. compression-test, internal engine issues can drive up costs tremendously. I bought a "good deal" EX500 30-yrs ago. It had wrist-pin lock that disappeared and ended up costing me full engine-rebuild. Total cost of "good deal" plus repairs ended up way more than what it would've been for running bike in 1st place.
$3500 isn't bad for a 954 in good shape. However, the 954 was only made in 2002 and 2003 and are fuel injected so no carbs to put jets in.... Are you sure it's not a 2000 F4?
If it is a 2000, it could be a 929. The bike in the photo's has inverted forks and the F4 didn't. The lower cowl is 2 pieces and the F4 has a single piece. But the 929 is still fuel injected, so again no jets to replace. I'd definitely be checking the VIN to see what it really is. Make sure title matches the VIN as well.
looks to be a 2000 929rr, though hard to tell from the size of the pics. However, still a fuel injected model i fit is a 929. That one looks like it's been through a lot, so beware....
Yeah, definitely 929, not sure why he listed as 954 to begin with, seems fishy if he's been riding for 30-yrs.
Get VIN and run it. If clean, then ask if you can have PPI done. If he doesn't agree, definitely something wrong.
