IMO a 954 is a good but a bad track bike...

The good its light, agile and handles like no tomorrow. like everyone would say its like a 600 bike with loads of power. I have a 954 and i swear by it day by day.

the only bad is that if your going serious racing, then you probably would get grouped with the liter class and when i been on the road with 1000cc bikes (as opposed to 929/954) those bikes get a little bit of a jump on you and has a little more power.

but im sure everyone here would swear by it depends on the rider and not the bike.

Anyone with Track day experience would yes say it good part the rider. And no doubt when it comes to club level track days. Thats exactly why I say set up. Spend the money on suspension front and rear. And good tires go to a school or two... most schools you can take a beginner and then a advanced after you have some track time. Don't worry about the go fast stuff. A well set up bike can alot of times beat higher HP bikes just because the time and money were spent in the right areas. BTW IF your mechanic told you the 954 wasn't a good track bike. Find another mechanic. He should be working on lawnmowers matbe.

True.....But thats why it is so much more enjoyable to go up the inside on them! The old 954 (8 Yrs mind you!) Can still hold her own against Todays Modern Liter bikes. Just put some distance on them in the Technical sections and block like hell in the Straights! ; )

If you still cant keep em off you. Accidently hit their kill switch.........

NICE! You have to post up Vid of her Trackday when she does it. Im trying to get my 5 yr old ready for mini moto/pocket bike racing. There are 2 tracks here in Oregon set up for it. Its quite a hoot to watch the little ones go at it. Check the Tracks out!

Trying to track down a little Polini for him as we speak. Thinking about Tarding out a little KTM 50 for him as well. The wife wants to just stick with Baseball.......

When I started in track days I was on my 954 with stock suspension. I struggled with confidence and total control because my springs were so under-sprung. I eventually picked up and R6 w/ full Ohlins R&T suspension and it was night and day. Literally first session on the new-to-me bike I was scrapin pucks and diggin deep.... It was like a freakin ginsu knife; slicing and dicing. My 954 hasn't seen the track since, but now I have R&T forks on my 54 and want to take it out.

Moral of my pointless story is suspension is KEY, regardless of what bike your on. My R6 is stripped and fully raced prepped so it is significantly lighter than my 954 (like one-handed manipulation lite), but for the novice/track day enthusiast you won't be so concerned with what bike your one and the weight of it as you will be with your suspension. TRUST!
