Looking at the manual is says:
Page 9-13
Shift drum/shift fork service can be done with engine installed in the frame.
It is in fine print, you can remove the drum, forks and fork shaft.
So we will give it a go.
Thanks for the help annd encouragement guys.
Peter

Well you get yourself a ratchet and socket and remove the bolts from the oil pan and get it out of the way then you Take the clutch cover and clutch assembly out. Then pull the shift linkage out. Then take the bolts out of the shift drum plate, pull the shift fork shaft out and the shift forks fall out the oil pan. Saves about 10 hours in labor and a few hundred bucks not having to buy gaskets and main bolts. I feel bad you split yours to service the shift forks, i had to replace 2nd gear and the lock washers that hold it in place on mine and its a s#!tty job.

Crap, wish I would have known that. I had new tranny gears I wanted to put in anyway. And it was a good experience tearing my bike down to nothing and then rebuilding it

Yeah its not that bad of a job other than time consuming and expensive. Just wish they had a cassette style trans.
