Default 2003 CBR954RR Gearbox Problem Help

My son has a 2003 CBR954RR with a gearbox noise, sounds like maybe selector or something like that.
Question is: Can you get to gearbox internals without lifting the engine or with engine lifted. Most early Honda's I have worked on you have to split the whole engine. Seeing the bike is in Qld and I am in northern NSW I cannot look at it.
So I ask all the wizards here ;-)
Anyone had a similar problem?

There is a service manual that you can easily download on GOOGLE. It tells you everything you can service with the engine in the frame.

I have a noise aswell. It only happens when I'm shifting into 1-2-3 going really slow. It's not a grinding noise, or a loud knocking noise. It's more of a soft knock. It's only when I pull in the clutch going about 5mph, and it sounds like something is bouncing. It's very hard to describe the noise typing it out like this. When the clutch goes in, it sounds like something falls and softly bounces 1 or 2 times. I imagine it as a really long dogbone/rear suspension linkage type bar, and one end is supported by the bolt, and the other end is being held up by my fingers. When I let go of the end, it falls down and bounces when the end hits the ground.... LOL I know its so hard to describe it. It doesn't sound painful, just something i've never heard before on another bike.

Omaha rider, that low rpm knocking is normal, nothing is wrong. Ozengines, please explain the noise, is it in one or two or all the gears? I just put a new tranny in my bike, and you have to drop the motor and split the case, time consuming for one guy but an extra guy is needed. My tranny sounded pretty bad in third and fourth gears, and I expected to find broken gears when I opened it up but the gears looked brand new. Turns out that I bent a shift fork and the gears were slightly grinding, not near as bad as it sounded running in third

I will ask my son the exact problem and get back.
In my 20's would have pulled this down Friday night and have it back on the road Monday for work. Now in my late 50's I just can't be bothered.
He has been quoted between $2000-$3000 to rebuild box, but of course when you split the engine you might as well do valves, rings, bearings, cam chain & tensioner and the list goes on.
He only paid $2400 for the bike but it is immaculate, owned by an older rider.
More soon guys.

Ok guys, my son rang me.
When the engine is idling on the center stand in neutral and you turn the rear wheel the gearbox makes a rattling noise in certain spots. When riding the noise is there also and it jumps out of second sometimes. So I would say selector fork, what do you reckon?
Also he said he read the manual and you can pull the drum & selectors out from behind the cluch housing, is that correct??

Sounds like a bent shift fork to me. Unfortunately, its not that easy, the case will have to be split. I wish I could upload pics from my phone to here, could show you pics of my tranny rebuild

or shift drum.... just another idea...

but you'll have to split the case either way,

That's correct, but I don't see how the drum could be the issue though, I would push toward a fork.

The shift drum and forks can be serviced with the engine in frame and NOT splitting the cases. Drop the exhaust and oil pan.

Not sure how you're going to accomplish that, let me know how you do that
