Tick noise... valve clearance or .......????
It's not that crazy. In fact it seems pretty easy to determine where the issue is. It just requires the proper equipment. A meter that has Peak Hold ability (which allows you to read really short duration voltages) is not that expensive. The one here is less than $50 US. Rather than throw parts at something, wouldn't it make sense to actually check/test and then know what the cause is?
