A marine's first ride
This has nothing to do with anything, just a funny story to share with my fellow nine-two-niners my uncle just told me.
He was a Marine in 1952 when he was given his one and only ride on a motorcycle, I believe on a Harley 45 judging by the photo he showed me.
As he tells it -
"When I was in the Marines stationed in Oceanside, California I worked
with a woman Marine who was a real tom boy. Her name was Lenelda.
We called her Putt Putt because she always rode around on a motorcycle and
was always wanting to give me a ride. I always refused.
One day we had a beach party which was a few miles away from our base. Another Marine who
had an old Packard took me there. While there, he got involved with a few
chicks and took off with them in the Packard, leaving me stranded. I had no idea how I
was going to get back to the base. While standing there wondering what to
do, along comes Putt Putt on her motorcycle. I told her what happened and she said, "Don't
worry, I'll take you to your barracks".
We take off on it and all of a sudden there is a big traffic jam. But she just drove between the lanes of traffic
and said, "Aren't you glad you're on a motorcycle"? When we got up to
the head of the traffic jam,we saw thatit had been caused by an accident - there was the Packard that I should have been
in, all smashed up and the ambulance was there. Again she said, "Aren't
you glad you're on a motorcycle"? When we got to the base she stopped at
the gate to show her ID. As I was reaching for my wallet to show my ID
the guard waved her on. She took off and I fell back – out of reflex I threw my arms around her and grabbed her where a gentleman don't grab a lady, right on the *****. She looks back and says, "Aren't you glad you are on a motorcycle"? I sure was!"
