Default Going to look at a 929rr today, need some advice.

Hello everyone!

New to this forum, but I figured this would be the best place to check in and ask a few questions about a bike I'm going to look at today. It is a 2000 929rr with just shy of 30,000 miles on it. This will be my first motorcycle purchase but I have been riding a 2002 ZRX 1200r and am comfortable riding larger cc bikes. I am unsure of how well it has been taken care of and the dealer does not know for sure other than the oil and filter change they just did to it when it was traded in. Here are my questions:

The bike has been custom painted, which leads me to believe that it has been laid down. It does have some road rash on the left side cover but doesn't appear to be bad. Anything I should look for specifically?

The bike has had the mirrors removed, further signs of a bad crash?

Anything I should be familiar with when it comes to the 2000 929s? I know that Honda's are super reliable and will last forever if taken care of, but how much of a hassle is it when it hasn't been with the miles it has on it now?

Here's a link to the bike: 2000 Honda CBR900RR - Used Motorcycle Marion IL | Cycle Connection

Thanks in advance for the help everyone.

Welcome to the forum...and hopefully the 929 family.

30k is not a lot of miles, if it has been maintained. With all of the obvious mods and aftermarket fairings/paint, I wouldn't trust the mileage on the bike or the motor. Many times bikes are assembled from a few different bikes, painted up, and sold. I'm not saying this is the case, but beware. Clusters are easily changed.

With that said, the rash on the left is typical of a crash. Make sure the cover and engine case behind it aren't cracked. The mirrors have been removed, but the plates cover where they bolt to. Make sure that the fairing is in good shape to put mirrors on. Make sure to look at the forks for damage from the crash or previous signs of stunting. The bar ends are also missing.

As with any used bike, go over it with a fine toothed comb. Bring someone that knows bikes with you to look at it as well. You may know about bikes, but your judgement will be a little clouded on this one from the excitement.

Good luck!

ya, i would have to agree with demon - i think it probably has been up close and personal with the pavement. however, as long as the frame, forks, subframe, swingarm, is straight and the motor casings aren't cracked, i wouldn't worry about that. the rash on the stator cover is indeed very common - even in a tip over from 0 mph.

maybe peek under the nose and through the forks to make sure the radiator is straight - look at the brace that holds it up from the bottom, make sure it's straight too.

make sure the fairing stay is good up front (those easily snap in big offs), make sure the fairings line up correctly, etc.

but you have to judge it, or rather, someone who is there in person. good luck, i hope it turns out to be a good bike and you get it.

Went and looked at it today. Other than it being pretty dirty (my guess is that it sits outside or the old owner wasn't afraid of riding in the rain) it seemed ok. The levers were aftermarket also, something I didn't notice in the pictures. Everything seemed ok and it rode excellent. Now I just have to work on them dropping the price and I'm pretty positive this will be my new bike!
