Default battery charging problem

My battery is dead. It reads 10.2 V at idle then when I rev it up and keep it around 5 grand it stays the same. I am thinking the regulator/rectifier but I know it could be the stator.... I looked at the back of the R/R and there was a little mark on the back but it is really hard to tell if it is a pin that is burned or not..... tell me what you think guys...

I'm certain you are dying to get back on the road, man - but to do this right is gonna take a little time.
As well, doing it right is a bit too complicated to describe here. I would urge you to get the Haynes manual for the bike and follow the recommendations for testing the stator. It involves accessing the first connector off the stator, which is forward of the ECM under the seat and fuel tank. If the stator passes the ohmeter tests, and the battery leakage test is OK, then suspect the rectifier/regulator.
The fact that your system fails the voltage check on the low side rather than the high side leads me to suspect the stator being open or shorted to ground. The few rectifiers I've heard of going bad were sending out too much voltage and burning light bulbs and such.

Let us know how you make out. I just changed my stator for the same symptoms as yours, and my system now puts out 14.75 ( right in the middle of manufacturer's specs, 14 to 15.5 ). A good way to really put a repaired system to the test is to wait for the radiator fan to kick on and turn on the high beams - at idle you'l get around 13 volts, and revving it a little should raise it to 14.5 or so and hold it there. ( It shouldn't OVER shoot either, not above 15.5 or so.)

hey thanks a lot for the fast reply sixs929! I actually had a shop look at it and they said it was the R/R so I ordered one and should have it in soon. I will fill you in when I get it in and tell you what happens! thanks again!
