Default Speedometer & odometer not moving (PROBLEM SOLVED)

Hi gang, I have a 1994 CBR 900rr.
As the title states, the speedo and odometer aren't moving.

I am mechanically inclined so I have done some preliminary measures as follows.

1) The gauge cluster seems to work fine because when I spin the lower end of the cable with my fingers with the upper end attached to the gauge cluster, the speedo and odometer move.

2) When I connect the lower end of the cable and turn the tire/wheel, I can see the upper end of the cable spin.

3) Cable is not broken in the middle (one end spins the other even under resistance).

So...the tire/wheel does spin the cable. And the cable does spin the speedo and odometer.
Yet when the cable is connected at both ends, the speedo & odometer won't turn.

My suspicions (and I could be wrong): the cable somehow is worn or something is worn so that both ends of the speedo cable are never engaged at the same time.
If I am right....how do I know what part is broken or worn? Which do I replace?

Any ideas?

Maybe worn cable or dirty connection. Just a shot in dark.

I am not sure if your guage cluster is very different from a 99 model, but I had a similar experience: speedo, tach and the screen displaying my milage stopped working. The turn signal lamps and oil warning light, etc were all fine. I took the bike in to my mechanic and we found that two resisters on the circuit board on the back of the speedo/tach had blown. He replaced my resisters and everything worked 100% again. Good luck, hope you find the answer.

Thanks guys.
I've got an old school bike; it has a mechanical speedometer that is driven by a spinning cable.

My strong suspicions indicate that there is some wear between the wheel end and the speedo.
The only thing is, where is the wear?
I am going to take another look at the cable ends and both ends that they connect to.
I'll probably need a flashlight...

It sounds like one of the cable end fittings are slipping. Usually square, check for rounding. May not happen when manually turning by hand, not enough force on cable. Probably only does it while riding.

I found the problem.
It is at the wheel side.
The speedo sending unit AKA speedo drive has a slot that fits in the speedo cable, well that slot broke off and went in the speedo cable.

So I made a thread in the want to buy section for a speedo drive sending unit.

Thanks for your help and support. Will post pics of the break later .

So I diagnosed the problem. If this anatomy helps anyone else in the future, here you go.
