Default Signs of a bad chain?

I just purchased a 1999 model 900RR yesterday and the previous owner warned me that the chain was getting pretty bad and needed to be replaced before I ride very much. I have no issues with that, but I'm kind of curious what let this guy know it was bad? This is my first chain drive bike, so please forgive me if it's common knowledge.

I ordered a new chain and sproket set, but visually I don't see anything that looks off, so I'm just wondering what signs there might be, for future reference.

Thanks guys!

Alex,

Binding issues can be detected if you put the back up on a stand and then you can check each segment of the chain.

Stretching to beyond the limit...well, on the back of my 94 on the swingarm, there is an adjustment where you can tension (or slacken) the chain. When you achieve proper slack, you will then see around the axle area where you are at in terms of the factory's recommended maximum stretch limit.
