Default Putting jet kit in the carbs

Finally got a jet kit for my 95 900rr since it's got a full exhaust and k&n filter, I ended up getting a k&n stage7 jet kit. Took the carbs apart and it looks like it had stock jets and everything else looked stock as well ( I guess previous owner got all the bolt ons, but didn't jet the carbs), the carbs are very clean so far, no problems, but the bike was always had idling problems, especially cold, so I figured the carbs were filthy, but I guess the problem is somewhere else. so which jets should I put in there, I have 116, 118, and 120s in the kit, I am thinking about putting 120s in there. One more question, one thing that I've discovered is that there were no sub air filter, no charcoal canister, no purge control valve, and no air vent conrol valve. Are those things important?? Would they cause my bike to idle little funny??

Hopefully I'll get some answears. Thanks in advance.

Finally got to drive the bike the first time, it feels kind of funny, the idle problem went away, it idles like a champ now, but the power is little different, it feels like all or nothing, if you give it around 40% throttle it's not doing anything and then it just snaps and you start moving fairly quickly. Is that normal or what??

That sounds like a problem to me. I'll preface this by saying I am fairly inexperienced mechanically, though I've been learning through experience the past couple months with my bikes. But it sounds like perhaps you installed some of the jets incorrectly, or perhaps they are clogged (though I'm not sure how that would come about with new jets). It may just be the power curve with the new jets as well, but it seems more likely that... damn, I can't remember the names of the jets, but the jets that deliver fuel when you have the throttle below (40% you said?) are not functioning correctly - while those after 40% are functioning fine - thus the jump in power when you break 40%. Anyway, just my two cents, if anyone knows more or can confirm/ deny this idea, please chime in.

Again, im not sure. If it idles fine and runs fine after 40%, then i think the issue is with the jets controlling 1-39% throttle. Might want to take out the carbs and just go over them, make sure everything is properly set up. Hopefully someone with a bit more experience can come in here and help ya out though.

Hey what sup. First off i think the stage 7 is for raceing? But if it was me and i already had that kit i would put the small jets in the carb make sure everything is right and then see what you got. Dont forget you may need to get the carbs sinked with gauges now. Let us know what happens. UH HUH

I'll go ahead and put the smallest jets and see what that does, but while looking at the carbs I found something that got me thinking. There are threaded holes in the cyl head under each carb and they are open, I don't think that they should be open for some reason, I tryed looking at the repair manual and the only thing that I could find is that there might of been some kind of secondary air supply system and it was removed and now there is a vacuum leak. I think those should be at least plugged up. Man I sure would like to find a person that owned this bike before and break his little fingers for doing all this stuff to the bike.

It sounds like you have the California-only emissions control system, only someone removed it. Those threaded holes, the missing air suction valve, pressure control valve, collection canister, and about 8 feet of hose are all part of the ECS. From the fuel tank to the carbs to the air intake to the exhaust, that engine was designed to have the California system in place. It was illegal to remove, but quite a few people did it, so check with a Honda dealer if you know one, if you don't, take them some Krispy Kremes and get to know 'em. They'll help you. You may only have to grab a few parts off ebay, but be careful not to buy the same ECS-only parts: head, carbs, etc. Wait for a reputable seller with a high feedback (99% or above) to list clean, good parts. Good luck!

I think I finally figured out, there were 3 holes and #3 cyl had a vacuum hose, so I think those hoses were used to sync the carbs, I don't know why they were open, but I plugged them up, and the bike runs much better, the bottom end is very snappy ones again, the top end is about the same. I am going to make one change at a time and see what it does. I am going to drive it for a while and see what it does and how it runs, and then play with the fuel jets, just one step at a time.

Thank you guys.

Well, I put 116 jets in there and I think it lost some power on the top end, so I don't know what's going on. I looked at the needles that were in there originaly and they looked little different, so I don't know what's next. I think I am going to put what came out of the bike in the first place and go from there, unless you guys have some ideas.. Oh, almost forgot, I don't know if it's normal, but when I first start the bike I have to let it idle for about 30 seconds, and if I try to rev it before it warms up it kinds of hits a rev limiter at 5k rpm and if I stay on it it'll clear up and rev to the 11k rpm, but puffing some black smoke ( rich). Once it warms up it revs freely and doesn't smoke like it suppost to, so it runs rich when cold, but when warms up it runs lean???? Doesn't make sence.
