Hey guys been a long time since i was on this forum..... hell last time i had a cbr6 but i saw the light

OK bike is in at the local Honda Shop here in Salt Lake getting a 24k service done.
It hasn't been used in a couple of years at least before i bought it so it runs pretty bad, hence the carb tune and all. It also has the infamous cct rattle that these bikes get so that is being replaced with an APE manual one.
Now here is the opinion bit.
The tech at the shop says the crap running and ticking sound may be caused by a cracked or holed piston.
I've never heard of a bad piston causing a ticking noise ( bad running yeah), so have any of you guys ever experienced or heard of anything like that??????

 

That's a first for me in my 18 yrs of riding.

Never heard of such a thing, and Honda motors especially the 900rr motors are known for being very very tough.

Get a second opinion asap. And avoid that first mechanic at all costs.

 

Never heard of a problem with cracked/holes in pistons on RR's. A quick compression test would confirm.

 

Normally I would have done all the testing myself but I've left on an army duty for the next few weeks and left the bike with the dealer as I don't have time. Like you guys I've never heard of a piston issue with bikes in general let alone the rr. But I know the rr has some 'quirks' that only seem to effect this bike like the cct. Hence the reason I wondered about this. Thanks for the reply s also

 

Who is it ... Perry Brothers ... Plaza Cycle ... sounds like they're trying to gouge a bigger bill out of you ...

 

A ticking noise sounds like a loose valve, They are trying to screw you. My 99 ticked from the day I bought it till the first valve adj. That solved the problem, The only M/C I ever heard of punching a piston was an XL350. Some Idiot dropped a nut in the engine when I was rebuilding it in HS, Of course didn't say anything. First start pop, And back to the drawing board

 

It's honda world ( which used to be Perry brothers ).
Which is a shame because they actually used to be a good shop where you wouldn't feel like you were being screwed. But I think you should expect better techs for $100 they charge for labor rates

 

At the very least get a second opinion, maybe.

They may not be trying to screw you, but it never hurts to be sure.

In my experience, many repair shops like to replace major parts, even if they can be repaired.

That may be due to the way they were trained and maybe for liability reasons....I dunno.

But I do know that in many cases, a minor part can be fixed instead of replaced at a much lower cost.
