key question
I have a '94 and my key is broken off in the ignition. Any ideas on how to get it out? Or do I have to buy a new ignition? If so, will a '95 work? Found one on ebay and was thinking of bidding.
Load the bike onto a trailer and take it toa locksmith. For about $10. he can extract it. If you call a locksmith out you will be looking at service charges plus the extraction. I know this for a fact - I'm a Master Locksmith and used to own my own shop.
Okay, no luck here with a locksmith to remove the key. Anyone know what other years will work with a '94 900rr? Looking at ebay it seems like the 600rr ignition is the same. Any ideas from anyone??
Take a small paperclip, straighten it out, the bend just the tip to a 90 degree angle. Sharpen it with a grinder so that it is sharp and small enough to slide into the keyhole. You should be able to grab the broken peice and pull it out. It may take a few tries, but I think you can get it.
Take an old hacksaw blade. On the side of the blade where the teeth are facing away from you, cut, file or grind away the smooth part of the blade about one inch. File or grind it down so only about 1/16 inch of metal remains above the teeth. Holding the other end of the sawblade, you now have a one-inch "key" of saw teeth with the teeth facing your hand. Push your new key above the top of the broken key. You don't have to go all the way to the end. The teeth will grip the old key and pull it right out.
