Default carb question and battery question

ok first the carb question: i have a 1997 CBR900RR and it is having some slow response times on it at low or constanst speeds. if it sitting idleing and i just ****** the throtte (from zero to wide open) there is a 1-3 second pause before it actually hits. sound like it is drowning the plugs and they have to catch up. plugs are still very new. also if riding at a constant speed, say 55 MPH in 3rd gear your feel the bike "jump" like it has a bad miss. any suggestions?

now onto the battery: my bike just recently lost all the battery charge. was working fine and just would not crank back after a stop. we hooked jumper cables to it and it cranked right up but dies as soon as you take the cables off. i am thinking it is either the stator, regulator rectifier, or the new headlights. how do i test the stator/regulator rectifier? and i exchanged the stock bulbs in the headlight from a 45W to a ultra 55W bulb. do you think this could be putting my battery in a constant state of discharge? im hoping that it is just the 20 extra Watts that is killing my battery. but how do i know and take the bike out without having it leave me on the side of the road again?

You can get a volt-meter from Radio Shack or any electronics shop or car shop.

What you do is you touch the two probes...the red probe and the black probe to each battery connection point with the engine OFF.

That will show you if your battery is charged and if so how charged or if it's dead.


Next, you wanna turn your engine ON and then do the same thing with the probes....that will tell you whether the battery is being charged by your bike.

Rev the engine and you should see the voltmeter indicator lights jump...or move forward.

It's also possible that your bike is overcharging the battery, and when you rev the motor, the voltmeter lights should indicate that too.


I don't know about the carb issues though...maybe you have a stuck throttle cable?

if you are asking questions about carb problems chances are you are qualified to repair the problem it sounds to me like you are getting too muck fuel but you will want to take the bike to a qualified or experienced mechanic so he can check the condition of the plugs and make his or her determination from there!!!

ok my battery is still charged after taking it and charging it. i guess either my cable was loose or my reg/rec is about to crap out.

still have the issue with the low end on my bike. going to pull the tank and carbs monday and start on them. with a plug change.

now i have an issue with my clutch cable being completely adjusted out. clutch cable is new, cluct friction plates is new and the springs in the clutch is new. not sure what it going on here. also i dont remember and the book doesnt say but the bolts on the springs that go to the pressure plate (5 of them) you do tighten those all the way down right? i dont want to break on off in there!

clutch spring bolts get tightened down to 15 ft pounds the carb issue you are getting too much fuel start by raising the clip onn the needle by one clip possition this will drop the needle a little bit and take away some of your fuel issue then you want to make sure your air fuel mixture screw is turned out to 2and a quarter turns then drop one main jet size and then you will test and go from there if you have any trouble just let me know i can talk you through any of it

so you are saying that after all the adjusting i will need to buy a new jet kit? i dont get what you mean by "then drop one main jet size"

you have a jet kit, this is good you just have to start adjusting until you get it right or you should take it to someone qualified to such work

i think im going to take it to a qualified person as i dont know a freaking thing about carbs! however i am willing to learn and have a friend that might let me pass him wreches if i dont bother him so i can learn lol.

now my next question. i was told last night that the reason my canble is adjusted all the way out is that the part the the cable hooks into at the right crankcase area is twisted to far ahead. i was told that i need to take the cover back off and spin the rod until it goes back about 2 notches. i dont know what he is talkng about. the part he is sayins is where the bottom of the clutch cable hooks in. the part that pulls forward and disengages the clutch when the lever is pulled. does anyone know what he is talking about to reset it farther back? the book says nothing on this.

Not the answer you probably wanna hear, but our bikes are so old and have had probably many owners and those owners have done goodness knows what to our bikes.

My '93 900rr had a bad charging system, bad regulator/rect, bad stator and bad wiring harness.

The owners had also spliced into that harness to hook up all kinds of things (switches to kill the ignition, rear brake lights, etc) and other stuff.

It took a few trips to two different dealerships to get my bike "right."

Sounds like you might wanna do the same, to get all the kinks out.

But it will not be cheap most likely. All together it took me over $1,200 to get my bike right.

But it has been problem free for a year.
