Default jetting mpg ?'s

Hey all Just went through my first tank in the 99 900rr I just bought. I had to flip it to reserve at 69miles(when I filled back up it came to 17.9 MPG) from what I read in the forum that sucks as you are saying you guys flip at 120-150 miles. So I tore into the carbs and it has the twin air filters in it and a ?Factory jet kit?. It hasa 40 piolet in it, the mains say factory 140k on them. I live in utah elevtion around 4700 ft, Is this part of my mileage problem, just running too rich or does the jetting sound right? any help would be great. Too my knowledge stock motor, just the intake filters and erion exhaust.
Thanks-Harlem

Holy crap... not to ask a dumb question, but are you sure it was full? I can't imagine a 900 tuned or jetted so badly that it would only get 17 mpg. My 5000# 5.6L Titan gets 16.

I thought it was but I could be wrong. I'll see how the next few tanks go.

I have a 1997 with the factory pro air box mod and jet kit in it. Im running a 160-162 one or the other im not sure i know its adleast 160 i had so many jets in and out of it i had to order jets 6 times. I live in florida so im sea level but i get about 110 around town and 130-140 tops going from west palm beach to daytona. hope that helps you alittle . But i am running the factory pro plus 4 timming adv also. And i have a 520 chain kit and marchesini rims to which might make alittle differance.

I flip at 150 as well. Take into account HOW you ride as well. Are you shifting to next gear too early, too late? Riding in too high or low of a gear?
If your bike was bought used... is the tank a repaired tank and dent filled with putty?

I fill up at about 140, and got 44.5 mpg on my last tank. The bike is a bone stock '98, and I'm a pretty conservative rider. As they say, your mileage will vary!

I just finished my first tank of gas in mine at 125 miles. I'm conservative, but not all that experienced with a 900, so i'm probably shifting at wrong points. The last guy that owned the bike filled it up and set the odometer, so if he did it correctly, i'm on the low end. I will see what happens on this next tank which is my first to fill up.
