Ignition switch problem..turn key and no ligts come on...
Bikes been riding fine all summer. On Saturday, i turn the key and the lights don't come on. Play with it a little and it comes on. Okay, no big deal. Go for a long ride on Sunday wth the fellas and i cut my bioke off at a stop sign and turn the key to turn it on and nothing. No lights in the gauge cluster or headlights, however the fan is going so it is getting power. WHAT IT THE PROBLEM? BAD IGNITION?
How do i change that? I see wires from the ignition into the instrument cluster, so is it something in there? Any advise can help.
I actually had to push start the bike to get it started. I worrked after that but i need to get this sorted.

sorry but its impossible to narrow this down without an DVOM, or multimeter. You could have anything from loose connections to a crimped wire. You can throw parts at this all you want but it really could be simple. If you say you "played" with it and it worked then it sounds like something is loose or shorting out. Could even be a loose fuse. With electricity its really important to narrow it down. If you have no experience then just take it to a shop and save your time. If you have experience then get a DVOM and start to check connections, continuity, and voltage across the board. Good luck, sorry I can't help more.

Rode it today and no problems... i am just afraid to go for a long ride and get stuck somewhere. It has to be a loose coonection but i am trying to understand how to check the ignition. How does it come apart, or is it connected in the instrument clsuter?
I doubt it is the fuses because when they go, they go. I am going to play with the ignition wire, see where they lead. Does anyone have a ignition troubleshooting map or actuall cbr 900 service manual for a 93?

Well, i found out the problem,... she did the same thing again and i trying to push start it which worked the last time... weell nothing this time. I even let my buddy pull me, going 40mph and nothing. Well, obviously, I realized that no ignition, no spark . DUH! I traced the wires from the ignition and the connector must have overheated and melted causing a bad connection. Scraped it off and now i'm good.
No i have to find out why it was overheating!!! ...uuummmm.

Search through the old threads, I saw an electrical troubleshooting flowchart out of the Clymers on one of the threads a couple weeks ago when I was searching for something. I tried to do a search for it now, and couldn't find it, but it's in there, just will take a little digging.

There is a complete manual for the 96-99 as a PDF in this thread.

I'm sure the electrical troubleshooting map is probably the same for the earlier years
