I was following my girlfriend home today (45 miles from the house) was driving along at about 830 this evening when i noticed my speedo was acting funny, like it would cut out to zero then jump back up, next theing I know I stopped at a rr crossing and it died. So I immediately try to start it up, nothing, battery is dead. I just bought that battery new in feb. so I'm guessing it didn't get a charge, is this a problem with the stator? Can anyone run me thru replacing it if it is?

Or should I go OEM? I'm assuming I need a 96-99 since I have a 96 wiring harness and motor?

Here's what I found when I opened up the case. The wiring smells burnt, and was hanging on by a thread. I bought a aftermarket Electrosport one for $125 (OEM was 350.88!!!!)

Did you order a new gasket for the stator cover from ebay as well? gotta be like 7$ or so but you'll need it. AS well as fresh motor oil if yours was no good..

Yep I bought the new stator cover gasket too but I am unsure as to whether or not to put rtv sealant with it or not? And I bought more oil too lol

 

When I cracked my cover in a highside and replaced it, I only used the gasket and no RTV sealant. No leaks so far, however i'd consult the manual just in case.

 

I went ahead and used RTV sealant on the crankcase and cover. No problems. Now if I can only find out where the intermittent coolant leak is....

 

I found the coolant leak, it was loose clamps right before the thermostat housing, but I found that I'm leakin oil somewhere, and it is going down the left side of my bike, straight onto the tire. Hopefully it isn't the gasket I just put on? It shouldn't be tho. Sure is making the back tire slippery tho
