Default Help please Bike died

Whats up guys! Here is my problem...
I just bought my 97 900rr and last night coming home it went dead on me. I looked at the filter and it seems to be plugged, just a little gas present. Now here is the issue...I looked in my tank and there was rust present. flaking looking rust. The bike starts and when you give it gas it dies, (not when you gradually give it gas). Mind you I just bought this bike and The performance out of it is unreal...until yestarday. Did rust make it to the carbs? or could it be my fuel pump....by the way is my fuel pump in the tank? I dont hear it. Should I be able to hear it?
Thanks to all that are checking this thread out. Any help is appreciated!

That year shouldn't have a fuel pump. Gravity feed. The '93 - '94's had fuel pumps.

It is possible that rust is getting to the carbs but I would check the tank first. Empty out the tank and take out the petcock assembly. There is a filter screen that is attached to it on the inside of the tank. That may be getting clogged. While the tank is off and empty, it would be a good time to clean it out and treat it for the rust.

New as in never used? That is a great deal and will give you peace of mind over one that has been repaired....in my opinion.

Thanks for your answer! When I got home I looked at the bike and noticed that the privious owner had installed a second fuel filter (between the tank and the carbs) it was full! I mean FULL or rust from the tank, so I decided to take the tank off. Found out that the pedcock was also full of rust, I couldnt even blow air trought. I cleaned it, put everything back on and guess wahat........Its running and sounding soooooooooooo damn good!
Thanks for taking the time to help me.
Ps I have decided to take the tank to a local bike dude where he will acid wash and sand blast the inside, and put some coating, to prevent rust.
Once again THANKS!

you need to make sure they coat it completely if not the rust will just break loose and do the same thing but now will have all the other stuff comeing loose and getting into the carbs and that is bad
