Default bike died out of nowhere

ok, so....been enjoying my '94 F2 for a few months now.

i'm riding the other night, get where i'm going, all is well.

go to leave....and the bike cranks slowly, then stops cranking.

now all it'll do is click. it'll run just fine if i bump start it, runs like nothing's wrong....and i bought/installed a new battery, also tried jumping it off a (turned-off) car, and still all i get is clicks. once in a while i might get one slow crank, then back to clicks.

i feel like it's not the r/r because wouldn't that keep me from riding it? i've been riding it for 2 days now and it still hasnt died, at least as long as i push start every time.

connections look good, i think.....and fuses are ok. any ideas?

pull the connector to the r/r for starters and see if it burned

actually no, r/r connector isn't melted or burned or anything.

old battery was....swollen, i can't think of a better word for it....when i took it out. indicative of anything?

Check the electrical. Stator and R/R primarily. All parts that are related to the charging.

Swollen yep it sounds like the R/R went bad and over charged the battery...

Sometimes the ends of a battery will be severely swollen, and when accompanied by the case being too hot to touch, this usually indicates a malfunction in the charging system of the mototcycle. When severely overcharged, a lead-acid battery gases at a high level and the venting system built into the battery cannot handle the high level of gas, so the pressure builds inside the battery, resulting in the swollen ends. An unregulated alternator can put out a high level of charge, and can quickly ruin a battery. A swollen, hot battery is very dangerous, and should not be handled until it has been given sufficient time to cool and any hydrogen gas present to dissipate.

ok so i dont think its the r/r. well it might be, but i'm pretty sure the stator is bad too. went through the CBRWorld electrical diagnosis.....and these are the results.

the leakage test reads 0.

battery voltage and reg/rec voltage are both 12.68 - and this is on a new battery, never charged - so me riding it must be charging it somehow.

continuity between green wire on the r/r harness and ground is 0.00

all the three resistance tests on the yellow wires (A-B, B-C, and A-C) are all 0.00....which CBRWorld says means the wiring to the stator or the stator itself are bad.

i'm very confused. i rode all day today on the new, uncharged battery - how is it sitting right where it should be if the r/r is bad OR if the stator's bad? i'm starting to think this is maybe just a stupid switch or connection that's not quite right.

EDIT - just tested the voltages with the bike running....at idle, it's around 13.3, at 5K rpms it's about 14.6.

.....because if the r/r or stator was bad, the battery would either be under- or over-charged, wouldnt it?
hmph.

Default RE: bike died out of nowhere - END VERDICT

the starter's trash. i jumpered it straight to the battery, and it didnt budge.

ah well. the r/r and stator are pretty much junk, too.....and i just replaced the battery.....so really, once i replace the starter and r/r and stator, there's not much left to go wrong.....
