dumb question?
ORIGINAL: SpiritRR
Sounds a little scary trying to start it with an impact wrench...the variable speed of the wrench and what not. Definitely consult one of those 'ask a mechanic' places, at least I would.
At this point I would suspect and inspect the kill switch and the sidestand switch--both have the power to prevent fire. Obviously you need the tranny in neutral if the stand is down to start--but most likely you knew that already. I would also check the fuses, the ignition has its own, as well as the main fuse down by the starter relay on the right side of the engine. My book says check the starter relay for correct voltage, too.
Barring electrical gremlins, I would then suspect fuel delivery. 93-95 came with fuel pumps, as opposed to gravity fed vacuums on the later models. Your pump could be toast, the rubber holder things don't last very long with age--mine's only held on by one side, so yours may have died in the accident. You should be able to hear it when the starter spins, and it does have an electrical connection, so it may be fine, just not getting any power to pump with. The petcock is turned to ON or RES right?
Did you figure out the posting pictures thing yet? I could help with how I do it, at least.

i think that the starter relay is fine because it fires no problem, it's just the motor
does nothing. i'm starting to think that the starter isn't turning the motor.
it just sounds like the starter is spinning and not connecting w/the motor.
finally yes i made sure that the gas was turned on (probly the most common
mistake to make). i also pm ed you about posting pictures. thanks
Hey Ron.
Did you have to replace the stator cover? There is a gear in there that connects the starter gear to the flywheel. The shaft for said gear is held in place by a boss in the motor case and a boss in the stator cover. It may be either missing, broken, or just out of wack. It almost sounds like your trying to say that the starter spins over and the motor doesn't. Am I wrong?
I had this issue with my 96, when I put it together. The shaft was missing on mine.

you are correct. the starter will spin all day but not a chug or glug from the motor. i am going to check this out asap and if it's not it it's got to be the kill switch, i hope. thanks.
You said that the starter spins, but the motor does not. Does the starter spin when you turn the key on, and push the start button?
If so, I would be supprised if it had anything to do with the switch.
Also, if the tank was rusty inside and the gas was stale, if you haven't done it yet, you'll be rebuilding those carbs. I was lucky that the person who stored my RR, drained the carbs first.

yes. the motor should still attempt to start even if it does'nt start.. i 'm thinking that it has something to dow/the starter not makeing contact w/the motor.
well took the stator cover off last night & DAM it wasn't it! the motor is nowturnning but now i think it's fuel.
i think that it may be the fuel petcock, it looks a little sh*tty (rusty) & i'm seeing no fuel in the fuel filter.

when i bought my 94 the fuel pump was missing altogether. just a pipe from the tank to the carbs and it ran very well. i would clean the tank out and all the lines along with a good carb clean as a jet may be blocked if crap has got through the filter.
