cbr900rr cooking batteries...help!
hey there, this is my first post but i been reading around for awhile now,
but to the question at hand.
i just bought a 95 cbr900rr off a friend, and the bike has been having an issue with burning out batteries. before i owned the bike, my friend had it serviced and all was supposed to be taken care of. they changed the stator etc...
he had the bike on the road, for about a week and all was good. then one day, he left the key in and the lights on and the battery died. ok no biggie. but he jumped the bike off of a car, but everything seemed ok, so he paid no mind to it. then on a trip to the shore, he started smelling rottin eggs, he looked at the bike, and the battery was literally boiling over and the smell was the acid i guess in the battery, that was leaking out. he was able to charge the battery and get the bike home. he thought it was because he used a cheap battery or something. thats the last he rode it.
my guess is he messed something up when he jumped the bike with a car, even though the car wasnt running.
now he basically gives me the bike, and i throw a brand new $84 battery from honda in it. drive for a couple days no problems. but just today i took her out for about an hour or so ride, and then i start to smell rotting eggs. =\
i stop and check the bike, no acid any where, the battery isnt leaking or nothing. so i figure its time to get home quick before she blows. i turn around and about 10 miles down the road she gives out on me. battery dead.
i call roadside assistance and get towed home to post this.
any help with what could be causing the problem(s) or any ideas at all please post! this is my first bike and would reeealllly like to keep it and solve the problem. there is no other known issue with the bike. thanx!

i believe that the rectifer/regulator was changed when they changed the stator.
i just have a feeling that he fried one of those when he jumped the bike or something. it seems like the bike might actually be over charging the battery, because of the fact that i could smell the acid and stuff, and also that one battery actually was leaking acid.
how much are the replacement parts? stator, rectifer/regulator etc?
edit: just found out that he did not have the car running when he jumped the bike. so maybe something else....

ok just found out that the regulator may be to blame. my friend said they put a new one on at the shop, but i believe he is mistaken because, well it just dont look new.lol
and i also was talking to a tech at honda and he said the only way the battery will smell like that is if it is under a super heavy charge. as in, when the first make and charge the battery. he said it most definetly sounds like my rectifier/regulator is throwing to much juice back to the battery.
anyway been doing alot of searching around and found some regulators/rectifiers anywhere from 50 to 200 dollars. should i buy the 200 dollar joint off of honda or go for a cheaper OEM replacement? the aftermarket ones seem to have bigger heat sinks and the one i found said it will automatically stop overcharging and stuff. and that seems to be my problem. or do people have experiance with them crapping out on em.
edit: is it possible for me to use a R/R of another bike that is perhaps a bit bigger and less prone to failure? if so what bike do i get it from. sorry for all the noob questions. just trying to learn as much as i can about my new hobby.
