Default 96 woln't stay in 2nd

I'm looking at possibly buying a 1996 900 cbr which supposedly has a 1999 engine from a 919 cbr. Does this sound right? Also the trouble with it is the gear woln't stay in 2nd. Seller says it just pops out of 2nd but you can shift it through to third. How big of a problem could this be, in terms of $$ Any advice would be awseome! He's asking $2500.

Sounds like a broken shift fork. It's not imposible if you are handy, but expensive if you take it to a shop.

I read it else where that it could be the 2nd gear dog is there any signs or symptoms that would help discern the difference between a bad dog and a bad shfiting fork. Also I know nothing about this but it seems like if it is the dog then it'd be alot worse....? Thanks for the info bindel, is that write up in this forum?

If it's the dogs on second that engage the slots on the next gear then the cases have to be split to change the gears. if it's a bent Left shift fork you can change the fork or forks, shaft and drum from the oil pan and clutch side with the motor in the bike. a couple hours if it's the fork, some more hours and a shop is likely neede to spllit, repair and reassemble the cases. if it were me, i would check it first using the repair guide and if it is the dogs, take the motor out and just bring it to the shop. then it's about $500.00 labor if you supply the parts. otherwise, if you can't do any of it and you just wheel your bike into the shop, $2500.00 to repair and it's not worth buying. just my .02 hope it helps

I have the same problem with my 93 CBR, it shifts into 2nd fine but at around 5000RPm it rolls right out into Nuetral. after further inspection it was found to be a bad shift Dog 100.00 bucks 2 hours and an oil change later i was good to go.

Get the service manual!!! that clutch is a tricky one!

how in the world did you change out a shift dog in 2 hours?? you have to split the block to get to the gears.. or do you mean shift fork?
