95-97 headlight on a 94
I've got a '94 CBR 900RR and I'm looking to put a new front end from a later year on it. The '95-'97 catches my eye the most and I'm just wondering if anyone knows of any special wiring I have to do in order to get it to match up?I'm also currently looking out for all the parts (front fairing, headlight, marker light) so if anyone is selling some let me know! What I've heard is the fairing will mount right up to it without any mods. Thanks!

Um, well, I know there's no hook-up in the 94 harness for the position light. And I don't know if the 95-97 headlight has the same dual connections as the 93-94. What I do know is that the upper fairing stay (the black bracket that holds the whole enchilada together, gauges included--not the mirror stay) is different from 93-94 to 95-97. I always assumed it was because of the position light, since that's exactly where the main bolt sits on my 93. And I can't confirm whether the 93-95 style of mirror stay (H-shape rather than V-shape, like on 96-97, 98-99) will allow an upper cowl from later years to bolt right up. If it doesn't, you're screwed because there are no screw holes for the V-shape version, since it mounts behind the top triple instead of lower on the face of the frame for 93-94. I know the windscreens are slightly different from earlier to later, but I've never tried throwing one in there.
Also the fuse box and inner fairing dash panels are arranged and shaped slightly differently. I'm not sure it would be spic 'n span to route a 94 harness through a later cowl--you'd have to get the corresponding panels and then see if the fuse relay would fit--cause you know it slides into a bracket gap in the upper cowl plastic.
AND the lower inner fairings are different as well, the ones that sit just outside the forks and hold the turn signal brackets. You probably ought to get 95-97 editions of those too.
This is all assuming you want OEM style...I bet if you were to go aftermarket parts, almost none of this would concern you--except the fairing stay.

Most of what SpiritRR said is correct. You will need the inner panels, upper, windscreen, upper trim panels (the ones that fill the gap between the horizontal edge of the upper and the frame and hide the wiring)headlight and front stay all from a '95-'97. I did this once, aside from purchasing the above, I did the following,
Bought the connection for the position light and just spliced it into one of the headlights so that it came on whenever the headlights were on. Your existing headlight connection will work on any year headlight you wish to use.
I took the portion of my front stay that the gauges mount to off of the '93-'94front stay by cutting at the welds and drilling out the spot welds. I then welded it to the '95-'97 front stay so that my gauges would mount propperly. ('95-'97 guages are different) Take your time doing this and just tack weld at first then test fit. There isn't much room in there and you run the risk of your guages getting in the way of your windscreen if you just weld it up without testing. I still have the upper stay that I did this to.... I will try to find it and take a pic.
You will also need a '95 mirror stay. It mounts to the frame in the same location as '93-'94 but will mount to the upper correctly as your existing stay will not. At first it will appear that your existing mirror stay will work with a little tweaking...... Resist the temptation to do this and just spend the 70 bucks on the propper stay. You'll still be able to sell your existing one to offset your cost a bit.
You wont have any problem tucking wiring away or anything like that.

My '97 had been converted to a '98 front cowl when I bought it couple of years ago (I didn't even realise it at first!!). I suggest if possible you go for the '98 because the fairing is slightly more sharper and the butterfly shape light on the '97 not so appealing though!

I'm still figuring out which year to go with, it'll be some time still before I can even get the bike outside to work on it, just got hit with another half foot of snow. I don't have to worry about my mirror stay, never had one for my bike, haven't been able to find one either, the windscreen makes the upper fairing stiff enough and I have lightweight mirrors so they don't flex it much. I want to get one for the new one though. Should I go with new guages as well? If so, how would I hook up the speedo of a '95+ to a '94 since the '94 has the manual speedo gear on the front wheel? I current'y don't even have that hooked up, riding blind when it comes to speed.
