So I was riding along today on the road maybe about my 8th time since I've gotten my license and bike, and in 4th gear I was cruising about 45 mph, and all of a sudden I smelt something coming from my bike that almost smelt like it was metal grinding of some sort. what do you guys think it could've been? I'm not sure if the smell started then or it was the aftermath of me cruising in a speed camera zone at 32mph in 3rd gear..please help..thanks

 

Has this smell been continuous or was it something that only happened when you cruised through that area? I get wierd smells, but they usually end up being something environmental (stinky oil burning car, etc). How does your oil look (at the proper fill level, how dirty)? It never hurts to do an oil and filter change. You can run a magnet in the stream of oil as it drains and see if anything catches. Some light metallic particles should be expected, but anything large is a bad sign. Any smoke out of the exhaust? Have you had any problems with the engine's performance?

Thanks! and it wasn't continuous and the oil filter and oil was changed not even 300 miles ago. well this is the first time that had happened i hope it was just because I might've skipped a gear or something..

I wouldn't worry to much about it. My bike, with over 6500 miles on it has a very odd metal smell when there's puddles or it's raining. It's just the water burning off the exhaust but it still smells real wierd. In the beginning, when the bike was new, it had another somewhat metallic smell as the heat from the exhaust burning off the material they coated it with for shipping to keep out corrosion. You'll be fine, just keep an eye on it... or, well, a "nose" I guess. haha!
