Temp Jumping up and down 40 or so degrees in a second
Hey folks,
Just in case someone else has this issue, here is the problem and my solution.
My temp reading was jumping around all over the place once warmed up. It would read 200 degrees and then jump to 240 degrees in a second and the next second then down to 180 degrees. It was all over the place ranging 50 degrees or so and bouncing around at random. It was to big of jumps for low coolant. I knew my water pump was leaking at the weep hole, so I ordered new pump and engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor. Installed them and discovered it was still jumping around along with a new problem, the fuel pump wasn’t priming.
At this point, I figured it was the yellow grounding block by the tail cowl. It was not. I broke out the multi meter and started testing continuity. I eventually isolated my ground issue in the headlight harness and then started inspecting looking for damaged wires. What I actually found was just a small hole in the blue plug. Sure enough, that was my problem. The ground burned up and was no longer connecting.
I replaced the plug as I happened to have one on hand along with cleaning the burned pin and things are working great.
Just being methodical and unplugging things one at a time between continuity tests. The little hole is not suppose to be there.
