I have searched around a bit and haven't found directions on how to do this. Do I need to drain/bleed the brake fluid prior to removing these? Is there a source somewhere that would show me a play-by-play, or at least a few general guides on how to remove these things? I'm borderline retarded when it comes to anything taking things apart and need more help than most. Any help is appreciated.

red6, my problem isn't bleeding the brakes, it's whether that needs to be done in order to remove the front and rear reservoirs. i'm going to take off the front and then the rear because i think they look tacky, but don't know what needs to be done prior to removing them. if i take them off right now, it seems like things would be pretty messy.

 

Do NOT take off the front reservoir, thats just asking for big trouble, the front master cylinder alone does not hold enough fluid for proper long term use.

Taking the rear res off is no big deal you can just cut the tube (or get a clear brake fluid safe tube) about 2-3" or or so above rear master cylinder and plug it with a bolt, but MAKE SURE you have at least a 1/2" air gap between the bottom of the bolt and the fluid level. If you don't you risk the potentional of locking up the rear when it gets hot as it can lock-up due to fluid heat expansion.

 

jason, i'm not removing them because i thought they didn't have a purpose. i got some new ones that blend with the bike's overall look, so i'm just going to swap them out.

I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet to drain the fluid........do the modification and then refill the system and bleed the brakes.

 

well sheeeet, there just isn't an easy way out these days. btw blue fox, did you get the front and the rear, or just the front? i think these things should clean up the bike nicely, but time will tell.

I had a set of those on one of my past Duc's, they're a really nice product.

Easy way to do it is:
Pull the resivior off thetube - or the tube off the mastercylinder, depending on how you're going to install it. Have a couple of rags stuffed under there (one for the tube, one for the res).
Install the new res and connect all the lines (if the tube or Master cylinder inlet is going to be open for even a short amount of time cover it with something as you REALLY don't want to get any junk in there).
Fill the new res with you're favorite flavor of DOT 4 brake fluid. With the cap still off give the tube a couple of firm squeezes to fill it with fluid and get most of the air out.
Now just to be safe, bleed the brakes as normal from there.
