Default Easy accesss to speedo?

Hello,

I need to get to my speedometer and disassemble it from the bike. The main method I have done this before is by taking pretty much all the fairings off, including the front and then simply unscrew the speedo from the frame.

A friend of mine said that I could just take off the windscreen and access the back of the speedo that way. Is this true? Or must I remove all of the fairings and create a massive headache reassembling the plastics?

Thanks!

Should be able to get to what you need to by just removing the windscreen. I know mine is just held in by rubber gromments so I can actually just pop it off by grabbing and pulling on it. LOL

Hmm...I am determined to try this method. Your speedometer isn't attached with three screws? Mine has the electrical connector, and 3 screws. I just hope I can get to it without having to take off the fairings.

Yeah, I looked at it last night. Unless a 90 degree wrench is used, there's no way of unscrewing the screws that the speedometer. I'm going to remove the mirrors and just see if I can move the front fairing low enough to unscrew the screws. ?action=view&current=8011b3b8.jpg&evt=user_media_share

The front clip comes off really easily (as in less than 3 minutes). Take off the 3 bolts on each of the side fairings, the little push in plastic clips in the vicinity of the forks, remove the two bolts that hold the clip onto the steering head, grab both mirrors (still bolted on), pull a couple inches, disconnect the wire terminals under the left fairing, and remove the whole clip from the bike. Then access to everything is easy.

Reinstalling will take a little more time, as you have to make sure to line everything up and have the wires properly routed, but the first time I did it, reinstall took ~15 minutes. The second time, it took ~7 minutes, so it's not bad once you've already done it.
