Welcome to the CBRF family! I've got an 06 just like your 05. I recently picked up a pipe for my bike that's technicaly for a ZX6 that I'm going to try and fab into my bike, but if it becomes to difficult I'll just end up gutting my exhaust as well. Since I decided that I looked extensively into what it's going to take and it seems like a daunting task. It can be done but your going to have to have access to a welder. If you take off the shield on the back of the exhaust there will be another shield. That shield bolts to the part of the exhaust that you'll be gutting out. So you'll have to reweld in a bracket to hold the shield.
As for a cat it shouldn't have one unless you got a California model. At least the 06's didn't have one.
How many miles does your 05 have and what kind of maintenance has it had before you?? These motors can go for a hell of long time if maintained properly. I know there is a guy on here with an F4i that has over 200k miles on his bike and still going strong. These bikes are all capable of that if they're taken care of. The only thing you may need is something like a valve adjustment usually around 30k-35k miles. Most shops will do that for about 200-250 bucks.
