BOTH ASK YOURSELF WOULD YOU RATHER REPLACE BRAKE PADS OR A TRANSMISSION LOL I DOWN SHIFT 2gears at a time and hit the gas before engaging the clutch to bring the rpms up to catch easy when coming to a stop if that makes sence

I use both. When in traffic I keep a sharp look-out for car brake lights lighting up, wind down a little with the engine, use mostly front brake, and lightly feather the rear brake.

For me it's a situational thing and I'll engine brake, blip, use the front brake, rear brake, both brakes, or all of the above...whatever feels best fit for whatever driving situation I'm in...

I use a combo of both...but kinda related to this topic...

Anyone have a problem that if they dont downshift enough before stopping, they can't get into 1st?

For example, this has happened to me a few times, and I'm kinda scared its my 7k '03 tranny. I've been cruising in 5th and had to come to a quick stop...and didnt down shift but just pulled the clutch in...then when I down shift after coming to a stop, I can't go past neutral, and have to start in 2nd.

Am I not kicking hard enough on the shifter or am I just an idiot?
Nothing to worry about man, this is normal for any manual tranni machine. Dirt Bike, ATV, Street Bike etc. If your not down shifting as you stop it will be hard to find the lower gears when stopped sometimes impossible. But if you rock the bike back and forth while kicking down with the clutch in it should drop.

As from my experience this is likely to happen when the transession between gears doesn't result to or precede from high enough RPMs, if you more often shift up on low RPMs it'll become more likely the gear gets stuck and you'll have to release the clutch before you shift again. See this: http://www.peterverdonedesigns.com/gearing.htm

See the "Lowest Speed Highest Speed Lowest RPM Highest RPM" which gives you a better idea on when to shift.
