Default Can the Odometer reading be changed

I was looking at buying a new bike and have found a few that I may go look at. A couple questions for people that may know more about them. I found a 2007 CBR 600RR with 24kms. checked and it is not a typo only 24kms. The only concern I have is the bike has never been registered and is not at a honda dealer. Just wondering if it is possible to have raced the bike then changed out the odometer. If so what are the signs to look for to indicate this. Is there anyway a dealer could hook the bike up to a computer and get the full engine history on it.

Thanks for any help...

also, you could use a speedohealer to do it too couldn't you? or does that only adjust the speedo and not the odometer

I'm coming in a little late here, but I just recently bought a 2010 600 rr, and when the dealer received it, they did a test ride which put miles on the bike. After the test ride, they hook up a computer and reset the odometer to 00000. I think only Honda dealers can do this, or manipulate the system to reset any odometer.

Someone could have bought the bike and not ridden it - perhaps overseas in the sandbox, illness, death, divorce, any number of legit reasons.
1 Check with the owner
2 Check with local DMV

Could have been raced, or crashed and rebuilt with a new ODO.

I'd be asking many questions before I parted with any cash.

BTW - Changing the mileage on a vehicle/speedo is ILLEGAL, except under certain circumstances.

It is absolutely possible to reset the odometer, and there are companies out there that do it. They like to call it "mileage correction." It has legitimate uses, such as when you modify the gearing on your bike in such a way as to cause the front sprocket to spin faster or slower than factory, thus causing the odometer to think the bike has traveled less \ more miles than it actually has. Bluegauges.com comes to mind: http://www.bluegauges.com/mileages.htm Aside from that, simply ordering a brand new gauge cluster from the dealer will get you a zero-mileage readout. Very few bikes from any mfgr store the odo data anywhere besides the gauge cluster (unlike cars). Unfortunately, there's no real way to tell if this is the case, unless the bike is beat to hell and the cluster looks suspiciously new. What you CAN do, is look at other parts of the bike that wear with use: tires, seat cushion, brake and clutch cable slack, brake pads, color of the brake fluid, color of the exhaust manifold, etc etc etc.
