as soon as i saw this topic i just had to read everyones replies...becasue i don't no either and pretty much everyone that looks at my 05' rr asks me about that light! now i can explain that it is a safety likr or some crap.

 

I always assumed it was a safety light just incase the other bulbs go and your out and at least you can get it home very slowly at night. But when people ask I just say what I think. heheheh..

It's just a marker light for lane placement.

ive read it is a safety light, like stated above, but also lets cars know its a bike from a ways away...and not just a car with a headlight out
