Default Snapped exhaust stud

i have managed to snap the center two exhaust studs whilst trying to remove the old manifold. they snapped of with about 10mm sticking out. i have coated them in liquid wrench and then welded a nut on the end but i kep either breaking the weld or snapping a tiny bit more off the stud (i'm down to about 5mm left on both)

im starting to think im going to have to start drilling :-( i dont think im going to be able to get a drill in to position, has any body else drilled these bolts? and did they have to remove the forkes?

Vice grips might work if you can get a decent grip on the stud, worth a try before drilling.

Sounds like you need to disassemble entire front, clear way, and try to vise grip the rod studs off...if they don't come off, you need to grind flush, start with a metal pilot drill...you gotta retap the hole and re install a new stud.

that’s what I thought. I’ve got some friends saying I shouldn’t attempt to drill out the stud myself as I’m just going to ruin the engine. they think I should take the engine out and take it too someone to do. so now I’m confused as to what to do. I’ve never taken an engine out before and it seems like a lot of work.

I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago drilled it out and snapped two screw extractors and eventually the hole in the center of the snapped bolt tore open what I need up doing was placing my third screw extractor in the broken stud then grabbing it with vice grips and bout 1/8 of a turn at a time finally got it out of there was worried it never came out was seriously in there but finally broke it loose drills tricky to get in there but it's possible just gotta maneuver it in there right
