oopsy, just dropped a valve...i think?
61,900 miles and i think i dropped a vavle. heres the story...after a 250 mile trip of rippn the back roads today i was on the way home and i felt loss of power, it smelled of burnt oil out the exhaust with smoke. same time i felt power loss i herd a loud clacking noise from the head/ valve train area.i was looking at a mile uphill to push it so, i ran the motor another mile then the clanking sounded like it dropped down into the cylinder and it would not run hardly at all. thats when i shut it off and started to push..and push...
got it home a few minutes ago and the oil level went from right under full mark earlier today to under the low mark in the window. a lot of oil has come out the exhaust. my question is, if it dropped a valve could it make it spew oil out the exhaust like that? either way, i know for sure some part broke in the head and fell into the cylinder. looks like im gonna have some fun investigating...and a lot of spare parts.

thanks, yes i am absolutly positve its oil. a lot of oil. and its catastropic. if you put a few steel marbles inside the cylinder and cranked it up i imagine it would sound about the same as mine sounds now. about to buy another motor and have fun tearing this one down.
also my bike has run perfect until now. i mean really, really strong smooth running bike until this happened.

Hm. Yeah my money would be on a dropped valve. Seeing as it was run for a bit the damage will be pretty extensive.
Might be worth opening it up first to take a look, but if you can find a replacement powerplant for a good price, go for it.

ok, thanks for the insight and advice. on top of it all, the valve clearances have never been checked either. being that i ride every day year round, i guess its time for me to learn how to check/ adjust valves so i can keep the next motor in good running order.
