Default Dropped a valve

So I think my F2 has a broken valve... started her up after a brief ride and heard horrible grinding crunches and some smoke came up by the left clip-on... shut the bike off really quick. Since F2 engines are fairly cheap I thought I might as well make sure the valve is garbage.... so I started it up again... was expecting it to just crunch and grind but it actually idled on its own though it was REALLY rough idle. I got the bike home in a truck.

The guy at the salvage shop in town ants $500 for an F2 engine (no carbs/wiring/airbox) that has been about 40,000kms and has been sitting for a few years. Seams WAY to expensive considering I bought the whole bike for $500, though the busted motor had 89k kms on it when I bought it. I also really don't want to buy an engine that has been sitting for years.

So.... what do you guys think? how much should I pay for a new engine (ebay isn't that great as I live in canada and shipping is expensive)? what about a 900 engine, how much should that be? Should I try fixing the valve... I thought not since the cost of the repair would be as much as a new motor (one with less than 95k kms on it).

I would start first by looking on EBAY for an engine. $500 is about the going price, albeit thats a good, non corroded motor. I say take it apart and evaluate from there.

Are you going to have a dig around in the motor before you just buy a new one? I've rarely seen an interference engine such as this just up and idle again after something as catastrophic as that happens. I'm super curious...

Pull your starter out and check the gear, just a thought...

right side smoke....

on the right side:
-clutch
-PCV/CCV hose (on head cover)
-pulser
-t-stat

Maybe poke around at some of those... Pop the pulser cover and eye up the cam chain.

if you DID drop a valve and you get the head off, pics would be welcome.

What did the smoke smell like?
-Pancakes?
-Electrical fire?
-Coolant?
-Cake?

Jimmy - it was left side smoke... sorry didn't smell it.

Hershey - don't think it is the starter (though I wish it was) as the starter seemed to work fine when I started it up the second time

Oh, I forgot to mention that the left (when sitting on bike) cylinder has been ticking for the last month or so... was told (by good bike mechanic) that it was a valve (ticking was definitely NOT the CCT as I have an APE and know how to adjust it). The "valve drop" also happened in the parking lot of the local bike shop and the mechanics heard it happen and confirmed my thought that it was the valve (or worse).

I will be taking it apart soon but real busy at work right now and I have my F4i to keep me happy. I will post pics as soon as I can.

that would be pretty intense... Are these valves stainless or Ti? I assumed stainless, but those have an incredibly low failure rate. Maybe that day was not your day...
