Octane question
i hope you are happy moosestng, we are now arguing about over-oxgenating our motors with ethanol
..... by the way i am new to street bikes and have been using 93 in fear of detonation with the higher compression (then my standard car) i guess i will try out the old 87 and give her a go

So if your engine runs perfectly with no predetonation on 87 or 89 then running 100 would result in an incomplete burn thereby leaving deposits or particulates in the exhaust. In a car a catalytic converter would burn the particulates off before they were completely expelled. Also, most cars have some sort of knock sensor that retards ignition at any sign of predetonation.
If the manufacturer recommends 87 then you can probably use 87 all day long. Using 90 or 94 should not in anyway hurt the motor or leave excess carbon residue. But it's 20 - 40 cents a gallon more so it'll leave less money in your wallet as well.
It is relatively cheap insurance to go up a couple of grades if you know you're gonna be flogging the crap outta your ride for extended periods (track day) but for ordinary riding there's no reason to continually use a higher than recommended grade. And unless your bike is tuned for it, the 100+ is just pissing away money for less performance.
RE: Cold fusion = one bourbon, one scotch and one beer
Also, whatever is used at the tiny station in the canyons is what I use...cause they're the only ones that have gas out there...period.
Excellent!
So I decided to try 87 today, and I must admit, the bike did run better. I guess they are tuned for it, I have just never owned a bike that didnt say premium only on the gas cap before.
So how do you tune it for premium? adding a 07 r6 style exhaust, and k&n filter + jet kit soon, is there a way to tune the f4 for premium, ar jet for it?

To tune for higher octane = more compression, ignition advance, blown motor, NOS, etc.
And I must reiterate -- if you intend to wail away on your baby like a banshee (i.e. trackday type riding) then a tank full of the high $$ stuff is not a bad idea. But for most any other riding you'll be just fine with what the manufacturer suggests ...
