I was curious about this and I missed the section of the service manual where you could just short the two wires together at the sensor to test it so I pulled the gauges apart and the low fuel light is in fact not one but a pair of LEDs!

Just to add to this testing discussion - the light is not instant when you join the wires to test it.

It has a delay timer in the clocks - the light can take a minute to come on after the wires are joined together.

If I remember right, it didnt really matter where the wires hooked up. It should be just like a light switch. It will work either way.

turns out it was the fuel reserve sensor that needs to be replaced it is broken

it is really really simple to fix its just a matter of unscrewing the part and putting the new one in

now i just gotta find one

thanks a lot for your help guys
the sensor in the tank i's called a thermistor and after much searching online and several fruitless aggravating phone calls with parts houses I finally found one on eBay that was listed for 69 to 73 mustangs and cougars. The item number on eBay is 372154702745, it is absolutely identical to the sensor in our fuel tanks so the only thing you'll have to do to put it in your bike is unsolder the old one from the bracket then put the new one in the bracket and resolder it and then remount the bracket onto the fuel pump assembly and connect the wire.
