Default Fuel Pump Bypass

I just wanted to let people know that taking off my fuel pump and running the filter right off the tank and into the carbs has made my bike run like new. It started with my bike acting like it was msfireing and dropping rpms. Over time it got worse and would get bad after long rides. Eventually it finally died on a ride home from work. I was thinking maybe it could be the carbs needing a cleaning however it ran great when it was on the freeway. Anyhow when I had trouble starting the bike I new it had to be the pump. It still vibrated and primed im guessing just not enough to maintain a steady flow. After removing the pump it started right up and idles perfectly. No hesitation through any rpms. Took it for a ride through the twisties on Ortega Highway and rsn better than ever. Im writing this post in hopes that it is usefull to someone considering why there bike is running poorly or shutting off randomly. I've noticed a lot of threads recently on this subject. I will order the new part but in the meantime I run w/out the pump.

Do not flood the carburettor during a long layover?

I think if I turn off petcock I should be ok. Only doing this until new pump is sourced and installed. Im also just relieved to know all along that the reason it was running so crappy was the pump.

yeah, good for temp fix and also youve learned the common sense way to diagnose that certain fuel related kind of issue. i had the same problem and i checked for kinks in the fuel line first. then clogged fuel filter. after those checking out ok, i found the fuel pump point switch to be bad. replaced it and all was good, done it twice since then.

I've had the same problem and found my pump has failed as replaced the points but no output from it, still at least i have some spare points for when it goes again

I was thinking of getting one of these as a replacement but not knowing enough about them thought I'd better stay with the original design:

Specialist Piston Pumps

The price of this pump is £80 which is the same as the aftermarket pump i have ordered from my local shop BUT when I inquired with the local Honda dealer it was around £215.
So this pump seems pretty good value to try since you can get almost 3 for the price of the original !

Can anyone give me a run down as to how the fuel pump is triggered to pump fuel? Like from turning the key to driving off? There is a fuel pump transfer relay and a fuel cut-off relay in the loop somewhere plus the vacuum of the carbs themselves.

There seems to be a good amount of fuel pump related posts popping up. (I being one of them.)

Bikebandit.com has the oem fuel pump for $99USD. I just received mine from them. Have you checked to see if they ship overseas?

Hi again M1ke

I have received my OEM style aftermarket pump for £80 today from my local bike shop.
It is the cheapest available for me and is made by Tour Max which is the same maker as the point set I got earlier to try to get my original pump working.

I just wanted to point out to others on here that there is an alternative to try if its hard to get the OEM or maybe it could be more reliable as is of more modern design and does not use contact points.
