Default F4 tranny issue

I bought the bike about 4 years ago with 21,000 mile on it, after a couple months of riding it,, it felt like the chain was skipping when i cranked on it in second(my favorite gear for wheelies) so i replaced the chain and sprockets and it still did it but it was worse! When given little gas in second it pop out of gear like it's in neutral, all other gears are fine. I know whatever it is, it's not good, i haven't rode it in about 3 years now and would like to get started on fixxing it. Any suggestions on what it is? gears? shift fork? Someone told me that it's a known problem for these bikes? I'm fresh to this site and thanks for any info!

Well, first off I'd go ahead and take a look at what 2nd gear physically looks like.

As long as your tranny doesn't look liek this one, you'll be in OK shape:

Mine has the same problem and I plan on tearing it down this winter and replacing the shift forks and drum and take a look at 2nd gear or gears. I just wish I could do it with out splitting the case.

Go to bikebandit.com, find your bike, go to transmission and I've been told by a 40+ year experienced tech who's now an instructor that in this case you'd want to replace the; Shift Fork, shift drum, and the gears that correspond to second gear. (Which you will find in your service manual.) Also the manual has specs on the other components and what their service limits would be. If they're within spec then replacing the appropriate gears would be as far as you need to go.

Your worn down gears can cause the shift fork to bend out of spec. If that happens the fork can damage the groove the fork sits in on the drum.
