Default Before I get started

I'm going to be replacing my alternator casing this weekend, as it's cracked and leaking a little bit of oil. I was wondering if there is anything I might need to know. I have a new gasket and new case.

I know I need to drain the oil before I get started, but is there anything else that I should pay attention to when I take it off or things to remember when I put the new one on?

I'm expecting a simple remove and replace procedure, but sometimes things are more complicated than they appear...

Now I finally wont be getting engine oil on my left shoe! My shoes have become very different colors these days. lol

I'll be posting some pics on the "what have you done" thread when I get it started.

if there is oil coming out of the alternator cover you might have a whole other problem altogether. It should be dry under that cover. If you have oil in there the oil seal must be blown and leaking at the end of the crankshaft

Yea make sure you tighten the bolts to the correct torque spec, I want to say its 12 Nm, and make sure to remove all of the old gasket. Other than that it should be straightforward.

No, I've found the crack in the case, it's not the scratched part, but below it. It's a very small crack (can't really see it in a picture). I changed the oil about 2 months ago and it's still almost full. It only leaks when the oil is hot.

And I'll have to get myself a torque wrench then. I'll check the manual for the specs.

Another question. The chain tension adjuster bolt on the right side of my swingarm got stripped last time I replaced the chain. I seem to remember it stops at a certain point when you are loosening it. Anyone know how it comes off?
