99 F4 Rear Tire wear
Hello all,
I just put a new Rear Dunlop Sportmax Q2, in May of 2013.
I have been told these tires are only good for 3-5k miles? 8k max??
The wear bars are visible, and I almost s**t (censored) my pants, when I washed it last night.
So one question is, what rear tire has a good tread life, and decent wear?
I don't drag, burnout, or do anything stupid.
I ride straight, (not too many hairpins in Michigan) and I commute close to 80 miles to and from work, 5+ days a week, weather permitting.
I have a matching Q2 on the front, (2-3 months newer than the rear) and I was under the impression to always match both tire brand???
In other words, don't mix a Dunlop, with a Metzler etc???
Any thoughts / suggestions?
I really don't like buying a new rear tire every summer, if I can only get 8000 miles per tire.....

I found with Dunlop's you really need to keep an eye on your pressures and run them a bit lower on the street if your wearing out the centre, but the q2's do wear fast as they're nice and sticky. I've had sport smarts on the since January and they aren't to bad, just stick to dual compound tyres if you wont a longer life.

Compounds and tread pattern differences don't matter. In fact, in racing they mix them all the time.
What does matter is the shape and wear patterns. There is a shape difference between manufacturers. They are designed to roll over along the same profile. If your tires have a big enough differencein profiles, strange handling can occur. Same goes for wear. As a tire wears, the profile changes. Usually the tires do it together, thus matching each other to the bike and how you turn or not.
