Visually inspecting a stator?
Hey Freakyb,
Just a heads up if you decide to replace the stator with an OEM one. I had to replace my stator on 97 F3 back in June from an RR short and I used one from a 2004 CB600F. It is a bike that used a F3 engine and a lot of the parts are WAY cheaper. Here is the part # 31120-MBZ-611 ($161 vs. $286, prices from mrcycles.com). The only difference was the wireharness is bent back 90 degrees instead of coming straight out... I personally thought it was better.
The whole thing was brought to my attention because when I would start the bike, the bike turned over indicating the battery wasn't charging. I only had battery voltage at any RPM. Inspections and testing led to a RR and stator replacement. When I replaced my stator, I was getting low voltage and incorrect ohm readings. When visually inspecting it, I found that the epoxy coating was cracking and beginning to fall off on the outer diameter of the stator. There was no stinky mess at all. It look pretty much like yours. Since I have replaced the old stator and RR in my bike, things have been smooth sailing (DOH!! just jinxed myself).
There is a pretty thorough page in the forum for checking charging system. It's a link to a aftermarket manufacturer of motorcycle charging components. I'll see if I can find it.

I think I saw that link -- I just tried another from http://www.offwidth.co.uk/bike/gener...lt_finding.pdf
and ran through it with a friend of mine this morning -- and now it all checks out. I am getting better readings than I did yesterday before I ripped it all apart. Maybe I (dis)lodged something either way and now it works, or because I regrounded a few parts. I'll drive it seat only for a while until I'm convinced I wont be stranded for a third time before the farings go back on.
