it's honestly a lot of work for a bike.
probably take into consideration on how much your bike is worth before you spend that much to fix it.

Default valve adjustment

I just got mine done at the honda dealer for $200. Well worth the money. I had 30,000 miles on her. Bike runs smoother.

It's a sad fact that most shops don't carry the shims that you may need once they go in and check the clearances. You never know what size you're going to need. Then you have to pull the camshafts out of the bike to pull old shims out to see what size is in there now, so you can figure out what to order to get it back in spec. I don't trust anyone, be it dealer or independent shop to take the time to do it right. It's several hours to do if you have everything in hand. If you've got 30K on it and after it's done they say you didn't need any shims replaced, I'd be suspicious. Make sure you ask for the old shims if they have to replace any.

I'd do it myself. It's not a hard job to do, just time consuming to make the checks with a feeler gauge to determine if it's ok.

Just my $.02.

I guess I'm lucky, I've never had to adjust the valves and I've got 80K on my bike. I check them every couple years and I've got an exhaust that is .001 out of spec. It's just not worth all the time to go in and get it back into spec.

I know what you mean. I wouldn't pull it down for .001 either. I'm currently rebuilding a spare set of carbs to put on my bike. It's easier to do and then just swap out. It takes a lot of the down time away. When I do, I'll be checking the clearances because I'll have to sync the carbs as well. I've got 41k on the bike and it's never had carbs or clearances done. It's about time I'd say.
