transmission doesn't engage
Hi guys, I have a few question regarding the transmission. Do I need to change the transmission fluid like my 93 Camry? Where is the drain plug and the fill cap thingy? Or does it share the oil with the engine? By that I mean, the tranny and the engine are connected to allow the flow of oil from the engine to the tranny and back. And my transmission sometime doesn't engage when I down shift or up shift, I can hear metal banging against each other for 1 second and engine rev up to 5 or 6 RPM and loss of power and finally engaged the engine to pull the motorcycle forward.
During the 15 miles trip to school I had this happen 2 times, one in the street when upshifting, and one in the freeway when downshifting. What can I do to improve the tranny with actually getting my hand dirty like using additive and stuff.
Oh, yeah, sometime I skip a gear for example starting from 1, I shift to 3 then to 5 and then 6. When I down shift , I pull in the clutch and down shift all the way down to Neutral until I hit the intersection. And sometime before I got to the intersection and the light turn green and the bike is still moving about 15 or 20 mph, I upshift to second gear and I can hear the transmission part hitting inside. I think that is bad downshifting habit to Neutral and to keep the momentum to get to intersection. Please I need help on up and down shifting techniques too guys. Thank you you guys.

First to answer your question about the oil change, Yes! your engine oil and clutch use the same oil, so if you are having problems shifting up or down your first step should be to change the oil. If that does not produce the results you are looking for you may consider replacing the clutch or adjusting the cable, before you dive straight into the tranny looking for problems. As for the down shifting I read on this forum that sportbikes in general are only designed to down shift one gear at a time, by attempting to shift multiple gears without disengaging the clutch will end up with excesive wear and tear in side the tranny. Also I don't recomend ever putting additives into any engine (car, truck, or bike) most of those additives will leave a sludge or a residue inside your engine, and eventually can clog oil passages. This is all just my opinion, Food for the Brain!
Thank you. I have been thinking to mix half synthetic and half regular mineral oil, should that be ok? In my 93 Camry, when I go directly from 100% regular to 100% synthetic, I got leaks which stopped when I went back to 100% regular. I haven't got any leak when I mix then 50/50. Will this be ok with the bike? Hope it will help the transmission. Hey, bud, but I'm still confused.
Do the clutch , the engine and the transmission ALL SHARE the same oil in the bike. By that I mean, I just need to drain and fill new oil that will automatically fill the clutch and tranny too right? Not like in car where each have their own separated oil pan and filter? Right. THank

Yes - the engine, clutch and transmission all share the same oil (one drain and one filler takes care of it all). For that reason, most people will suggest that you use M/C specific oil... or at least one that doesn't have the additives that most car oils have. "Oil threads" on message boards like this are usually taboo - too many opinions... I know of at least one board that has completely banned them! From what I've read, Shell Rotella T Synthetic that you can buy cheaply (M/C specific oil is comparitavely expensive) at Walmart is safe for bikes. I've used it for several years with good results. Do some searches here and see what others have suggested.
