Regulator problem....HELP!
Hey guys.....My bike died on me a couple weeks back. I hooked a multimeter up to the NEW battery and found out it was not being charged between revs. So i moved on to the regulator....all the wiring checked out good coming from the sataor. So i hooked it up to a battery tender to fully charge it and took it down for a short spin. Came back AND THE REGULATOR WAS SMOKING!!!
My old regulator died on me a year ago so im thinking its something else thats causing it to die. I took an ACVolt reading of the wires coming from the stator. Around 9V idle and 11.5 at best when its reved up. Are these reading right or are they suppose to be a lot more than that? If there is not enough voltage going through will it cause the RR to burn like it did?

I feel for you man. I've had so many regulator problems thatI check to see if it ischarging my battery before any long ride. If you know how to do the diode test that will tell you if its the v reg or not (search the forums there is a troubleshooting tree somewhere). If its charging at about 14.2volts at around 5000 rpm your regulator is working. When they burn up though they tend to roast some of the connections along the way. AfterI replaced mysecond v reg onmy '97 f3 itstarted smoking from the harness bt. the stator and the v reg (it's right in front of the battery by the coolant over flow tank). The plastic connector was melted and didn't allow for a good connection. So I just hard wired it and now it doesn't even get warm. If it is your regulator that's smoking and not the harness connected to it, then it might be toast.
p.s. that connector on the v reg was also melted a little and I could see electrical arcs on one lead and had to rig it up for a better connection... good luck
