I used this "flow chart" when mine went out. The oem r/r usually gets hot a springs a small leak.

You should also check the connectors in the charging circuit because they get cooked when the RR goes out. If you don't check them and they are cooked, they'll cause the new to burn up prematurely due to the excess resistance. These RRs are a POS from the factory because of the electronic components (shunt vs. mosfet). I changed mine up to an RR that is out of an 08 R1. I also changed the wiring in the bike harness to a larger gauge (12 to 10) because for some reason Honda that it would be a great idea to run different gauges of wire. When coming out of the stator, it's 10 gauge and then changes at the stator plug to 12. This can also create excess resistance.
