rebuild cost?
Bike was running great, didn't start her for 2-3 weeks then when i started her yesterday she had a terrible miss. let her idle in the garage and got it up to temp, turned it off and then the upper rad hose blew a hole. the water was very oily and the oil has some water in it. Just replaced the thermostat a couple months ago and the coolant had no oil in it then. I havent really ridden her very much since then so I'm not sure how/when it would have blown a head gasket/cracked the head. I'm also wandering if something could be going on with the oil cooler.
If the oil cooler isn't a possibility what does a head gasket kit usually run, and what else should i rebuild while the head is off? TIA

The water pump is the most probable location for something going wrong and allowing oil and coolant to mingle. I think that's the area that I'd start looking in. The radiator hose could have blown just due to age.
I'm looking in my haynes and the seal youre talking about is the o-ring where the water pump impeller shaft mates with the oil pump shaft, correct? Is that just a standard o-ring i can pick up at a local auto parts?
on another note i found a motor from a '98 with 5k miles for $350, since mines a '95 it should bolt right up. and what about the ecm, will mine work?

i pulled the pump out and all the seals look good. #5 on that diagram just seals the pump housing, #15 would seal the water pump to the engine. they dont show the shaft seal on that diagram, but it looks to be in good shape too. is there any way to check the integrity of the shaft seal, and is it replaceable?
do these engines ever blow head gaskets or crack heads? it did get hot on me months ago when the thermo was stuck shut, but it ran great for months after that. that replacement motor is sounding better and better.

Yep. Mine is also a '95 with a '98 engine. It's a complete drop in; no modding at all.
